The APALSA Executive Board, 2024–2025

The APALSA Executive Board can be reached at apalsaeboard@umich.edu. We hold elections twice a year—once at the beginning of the Fall Semester for our 1L Representative positions and once at the end of the Winter Semester for the rest of our board.

President - Julie Liu (she/her)

Julie is a 2L from Houston, Texas. She graduated from New York University in 2021, where she majored in Politics and minored in Creative Writing and Business Studies. Before attending law school, Julie worked as an immigration paralegal in New York City and taught English in Taiwan as a Fulbright grantee. She spent her summer as a summer associate and 1L LCLD Scholar at Sidley Austin's Houston office. At Michigan Law, Julie also serves as the Managing Production Editor of the Michigan Technology Law Review and as Treasurer for Res Sista Loquitur (the Women of Color Coalition). In her free time, she enjoys trying different noodle-based dishes, reading murder mysteries, and exploring nontraditional forms of storytelling.

Secretary - Jacob Chang (he/him)

Jacob is a 2L from Nanjing, China. He graduated from The Ohio State University with a dual degree in Political Science and Psychology. Before law school, Jacob lived in Columbus, OH, and Washington, D.C., where he interned at the Ohio Attorney General's Office and the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. He spent the summer as a summer associate at a New York law firm. Outside of APALSA, Jacob is an FYI leader and the President of the Privacy & Technology Law Association. He is also an Associate Editor for the Michigan Technology Law Review. In his free time, Jacob enjoys cooking, creative writing, traveling, and trying out new restaurants.

Vice President - Ryan DoyLoo (he/him)

Ryan is a 2L from Malibu, California. He holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Gerontology from the University of Southern California. Prior to law school, he worked as a grantmaker at a philanthropic foundation. A registered patent agent, Ryan spent his 1L summer working in Tokyo at a law firm and will be joining Gibson Dunn next summer to focus on patent and trade secret litigation. Ryan serves as the Managing Online Editor of the Michigan Technology Law Review, an FYI Leader, and Co-President of MLaw Rocks. He is also a research assistant and is involved with U-M’s Innovation Partnerships. Ryan enjoys spending time with his dog, Kumo, and going on adventures with his friends.

Development Chair - Audrey Li (she/her)

Audrey is a 2L from Federal Way, WA. She graduated from New York University in 2019, where she majored in Linguistics and minored in Math. Before law school, Audrey lived in NYC and worked as a legal assistant in the capital markets group at Davis Polk & Wardwell. She spent her 1L summer as an intern to the Honorable Julia B. Owdziej at the Washtenaw Circuit Court. Outside of APALSA, Audrey is an Associate Editor for the Michigan Law Review. In her free time, Audrey enjoys gaming, reading scifi, and coddling her cat, Jiji.

Treasurer - Caleb Hu (he/him)

Caleb is a 2L from Houston, Texas. He graduated from the University of Texas, Austin in 2023 with a bachelor's in piano performance. Caleb spent his 1L summer in Ann Arbor, where he worked as a student attorney in the Pediatric Advocacy Clinic and the Child Advocacy Clinic. Outside of APALSA, Caleb is in the Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic and takes classes at the Michigan School of Music, Theatre, and Dance. In his free time, he likes to practice piano, compose music, write short plays, watch movies, and practice Muay Thai.

Development Chair - James Yen (he/him)

James is a 2L from Hong Kong. He graduated from Michigan State University in 2018, where he majored in Criminal Justice. Before law school, James lived in Lansing, Michigan where he worked for the Michigan Legislature as an analyst at the Office of Legislative Corrections Ombudsman. For 1L summer, he worked as an intern at the Michigan Department of Attorney General. Outside of APALSA, James is an Associate Editor for the Michigan Journal of International Law and 2L Representative for the International Law Society. In his free time, James enjoys playing board games and video games, traveling, fencing, hiking and golfing.

External Relations Chair - Delpha Carpenter (she/her)

Delpha is a 2L from Eugene, Oregon. She graduated from American University where she studied religious studies, international studies, and journalism. Prior to law school, Delpha served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Indonesia and worked for the federal government in Washington, DC. She spent her 1L summer at the Peace Corps, Office of Inspector General. At Michigan Law, Delpha is on the boards of the Michigan Voting Project and the Consumer Advocacy and Financial Regulation Organization, a Legal Practice Senior Judge, an FYI Leader, a student attorney for the Michigan Innocence Clinic, and an Associate Editor for the Michigan Law Review. In her free time, Delpha enjoys being outdoors, playing NYT games, thrifting, and cheering on Michigan!

Internal Relations Chair - Emily Ming (she/her)

Emily is a 2L from Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Northeastern University in 2020, where she majored in History and International Affairs. Before law school, Emily lived in New York City, and worked as a paralegal at a boutique law firm specializing in prime brokerage. She spent her summer as a judicial intern at the U.S. Court of International Trade. Outside of APALSA, Emily is Secretary of the International Law Society at Michigan Law. She is also an Associate Editor for the Michigan Journal of International Law. In her free time, Emily enjoys trying new food, playing pickleball, and going on walks.

Internal Relations Chair - Anna Wan (she/her)

Anna is a 2L from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Atlanta, GA. She graduated from Wellesley College in 2021 with a degree in Political Science. Prior to law school, Anna was an Asset Management Paralegal at Willkie Farr & Gallagher in New York where she assisted private equity firms. During her 1L summer, she worked as a Summer Associate at a biglaw firm in New York. In addition to APALSA, Anna is a 2L Representative for the American Constitution Society. In her free time, she enjoys cooking elaborate meals, perfecting her matcha tea recipe, hiking through mountains, and watching reality television.

Political Action Chair - Nate Sumimoto (he/him)

Nate is a 2L from Kansas City, Missouri. He graduated from the George Washington University in 2020, dual majoring in Political Science and History. Before law school, Nate worked as a Legal Investigator in the City of Kansas City Claims Unit. He spent his summer as a legal intern at the ACLU of Kansas. Outside of APALSA, Nate is an Associate Editor on the Michigan Journal of Race & Law, and is a logistics co-chair for the 1L Oral Advocacy Competition. In his free time, Nate enjoys reading about history, learning about elections and politics in other countries, and playing sports with friends.

3L Representative - Rina Zhang (she/her)

Rina is a 3L from Lansdale, Pennsylvania. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 2020 with a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Spanish. Before law school, Rina worked in science policy for two years. She spent her 1L summer as an LCLD scholar at an intellectual property firm in Houston and her 2L summer at a law firm in D.C. Outside of APALSA, Rina is the Managing Online Editor for the Michigan Law Review, a Senior Judge (teaching assistant) for the Legal Practice Program. She enjoys ceramic wheel throwing, cooking, and watching reality competition shows in her free time.

1L Representative - Ryan Kim (he/him)

Ryan is a 1L from Seoul, South Korea. He graduated from Cornell University in 2024, where he majored in Environment & Sustainability and Sociology. Ryan took two years off college to serve in the South Korean Army and started law school immediately after his undergraduate program. Outside of APALSA, Ryan is also a part of the Environmental Law Society at Michigan Law School. In his free time, Ryan likes to box, go on hikes, and get coffee that is too expensive for a broke law student.

1L Representative - Hannah Glass-Chapman (she/her)


Hannah is a 1L from Kalamazoo, Michigan. A double Wolverine, she graduated in 2024 with majors in Asian Studies and Film, Television, & Media. At Michigan Law, Hannah is pursuing an interest in international law. In her free time, Hannah enjoys drawing, going on walks, trying new restaurants, and spending time with her pets.

Public Interest Chair - Jennifer Kim (she/her)

Jenny was born in Seoul, South Korea and raised in Whippany, New Jersey. She studied International Relations at Brown and learned how to dance casino rueda salsa during a semester in Cuba. Before law school, she worked on consumer protection class actions and gun violence prevention litigation. This summer, she interned at ACLU-PA and worked on First Amendment, voting rights, and indigent defense reform. She is currently externing at the Pennsylvania Institutional Law Project, which files constitutional claims on behalf of incarcerated people in PA. In her free time, Jenny loves getting outdoors and making pottery.

1L Representative - Dana Chen (she/her)

Dana is a 1L from Queens, NY. She graduated from Smith College in 2020, where she majored in Philosophy and Government. Before law school, Dana worked as a paralegal at the DOJ Antitrust Division in DC. Outside of APALSA, she is a volunteer for Women Also Know Law. In her free time, Dana enjoys doing trivia, hiking/spending time outdoors, and going on long walks.

1L Representative - Lewin Kim (he/him)

Lewin is a 1L from New York and Fort Lee, New Jersey. He graduated from NYU in 2019, where he majored in Statistics and Marketing. Before law school, Lewin lived in Philadelphia, Irvine, and New York, working in marketing research and later in the TV ad sales pricing department at Warner Bros. Discovery. In his free time, Lewin enjoys organizing open-deck DJ events, watching basketball, and playing board games and fighting games.

3L Representative - Frank Sun (he/him)

Frank is a 3L from San Diego, California. He graduated from the University of California, San Diego in 2020, where he majored in History. Prior to law school, Frank worked at Fish & Richardson, a patent law firm. He spent his 1L summer as a legal intern at the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Colorado in Denver and his 2L summer as a summer associate at Akin in New York City. Outside of APALSA, Frank is a Notes Editor on the Michigan Technology Law Review and volunteers with the Sentence Commutation Project. In his free time, Frank likes to stand-up paddleboard, practice jiu jitsu, and watch classic foreign films.

1L Representative - Charles Tsao (he/him)

Charles is a 1L from Ann Arbor, Michigan. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 2020, where he majored in Sport Management. Before law school, Charles lived in Washington, D.C., and worked as a legal coordinator with the National Football League Players Association helping with players’ rights and benefits as professional football athletes. Outside of APALSA, Charles also joined the Sports Law Society, Business Law Association, and the Society for Space Law and Law of the Sea as a general member. In his free time, Charles enjoys watching movies (especially Marvel movies), loves to exercise and play sports, and enjoys taking his dog, Jerry, to the dog park.

1L Representative - Angie Gou (she/her)

Angie is a 1L from San Diego, CA. She graduated from the University of Chicago in 2020, where she majored in Economics and minored in Music. Before law school, Angie managed a boutique appellate litigation firm in the DMV area, worked on a blog that reported on the Supreme Court, and taught English in rural Osaka, Japan. Outside of APALSA, Angie is a member of Headnotes a cappella and the Organization of Public Interest Students. In her free time, Angie enjoys playing board games, learning languages, and eating good food.
